THE QUIET POWER OF GOD Reminiscing over some photographs from a few years ago, I came across some photos made while we were in Elmira, NY. Elmira is noteworthy because it is where Mark Twain wrote most of his marvelous stories. Elmira is also considered the “Soaring Capital of the Nation.” The sky around this beautiful nestled town near the Finger Lakes is full of gliders; engineless planes that soar through the air. It is a beautiful sight to see as these gliders drop their tow ropes and ride the air currents for hours. I stood there for a long time mesmerized watching how can these planes turn loops and seemingly defy gravity. The power of those air currents is spectacular. And yet it is such a quiet power. I did not hear the air currents, see them, or feel them but the proof of their existence was evident as the sky became filled with gliders. I am reminded of the quiet power of God; how subtle God is in so many instances and situations. There are times God’s strength is projected in vivid images; yet the quiet power of God is also present though we may not always notice or pay attention to it. Wake up early in the morning and feel the stillness that penetrates the space around us; that is God’s power. A child watches as a butterfly lights upon her finger; that is God’s power. An elderly couple married for 60 years slowly walking down a dirt road holding hands; that is God’s power. The fresh snow falling ever so gently, bringing freshness to the air and a blanket that covers the ground; that is God’s power. A church member who once a week takes an afternoon and visits residents who have no family at a local nursing home; that is God’s power. It is a quiet power and it is all around us, if we are willing to pay attention to it. Similar to the air currents that lift gliders to greater heights, God’s power can lift us to an awareness of how important simple items of care, hope, and love can be to others and to ourselves. It is not always easy to know that quiet power, for it is often very subtle and we must lean forward in our daily life to be touched by it. But when we do, we will know that we are not alone.
